The Philippines is one of Asia’s most thrilling art scenes. A new generation of artists born in the 1970’s and 1980’s has emerged over the last ten years, following a few internationally renowned artists in stride. With these artists’ prices soaring in Hong Kong and Singapore, the Philippines have ensured them a vibrant market, capable of attracting major collectors, by transferring their pieces back home. Many other artists are now taking advantage of this tremendous visibility.
The number of Filipino artists listed in the Top 500 contemporary artists by auction performances from July 2015 to June 2016.
The auction proceeds for the 27 artworks by Ronald Ventura (b. 1973) that were auctioned off in the past 12 months, including one auction result in excess of US$1 million. He landed the 44th position in the 2015/2016 ranking.
The appreciation of Jigger Cruz’s Blares of the Opposite (2013) the painting, which had sold in 2013 for US$24,000 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, was auctioned off for US$122,000 on 5 December 2015 at Leon Gallery’s in Manila.
