Art Market : The Week in numbers Joan Mitchell – Data Artprice


Joan Mitchell is one of the few women whom the market and critics value equally as high as the major male artists. With her art – a highly colourful asbtract expressionism – she ranks alongside Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock and her drawings and paintings elicit fierce bidding competition.
With the superb retrospective – Joan Mitchell: Her Life and Paintings, 14 November 2015-21 February 2016 – set to open in the next few days at Cologne’s Museum Ludwig in collaboration with the MoMA and the Centre George Pompidou, the time is right for Artprice to examin how this leading artist of the second half of 20th Century performs on the art market.

Mitchell’s position in Artprice’s ranking of the best performing female artists at auctions in the first ten months of 2015, with US$26.7 million. Yayoi Kusama has taken the lead so far, with her works yielding US$35.8 million.

The record hammer price for a work by Mitchell –Untitled (1960-1965) sold on 13 May 2014 at Christie’s New York – and the second best hammer price for a female artist. A work by Georgia O’Keeffe set the record at a historic US$39.5 million on 20 November 2014.
